Soil Erosion and Sediment Transport in Asia and Oceania: Drivers, Impacts, and Sustainable Management
Session Description Soil erosion and sediment transport are key processes shaping landscapes, sustaining ecosystems, and influencing human societies across Asia and Oceania. However, these processes are under increasing pressure due to rapid land-use changes, deforestation, urbanization, dam construction, and climate change. The region is home to some of the world’s largest rivers, such as the Mekong, Ganges-Brahmaputra, and the Yangtze, which are critical not only for sediment delivery to coasts and deltas but also for maintaining soil fertility and food security for millions of people. Meanwhile, in the Pacific islands and coastal areas, sediment transport mechanisms are influenced by a combination of monsoon-driven rainfall, cyclonic events, and rising sea levels.
This session aims to explore both the natural and anthropogenic factors driving soil erosion and sediment transport, with a focus on understanding sediment fluxes, patterns of erosion, deposition rates, and the implications for landform evolution and coastal systems.
By addressing these topics, the session seeks to provide a platform for scientists, engineers, and policymakers to discuss the challenges and innovations in managing sediment dynamics in a region undergoing rapid environmental changes. We encourage submissions based on observational, experimental, and modeling studies from diverse geographical settings within Asia and Oceania.
