Climate, Water Discharge and Sediment Quality
Global warming and human activities affect water resources around the world. In particular in Asia, climate change impacts, rapid economic development and growing population density in China have significant impacts on water resources in many regions. Larger Asian river basins and especially their origins and deltas are likely to be most affected by climate change. These densely-populated areas of the larger Asian river basins will be at risk due to intensefied flood and drought events.
To avoid adverse effects, knowledge must be gained on the variations in climate extremes, river discharge and sediment regimes because the larger Asian rivers have very high discharge amounts and produce the highest sediment loads in the world, it is necessary to further develop models for the assessment of climate extremes and for the prediction of the hydrological responses such as changes in water flow and sediment fluxes of the larger Asian river basins. For this, scientific research and studies need to be conducted on future climate and surface changes on regional water resources for decision-making and sector specific climate change adaptation and integrated water resources management.
